Medical Engineering also is known as Biomedical Engineering is the multidisciplinary field of study that connects Biology with Engineering. It can also be described as the field of science where we apply engineering principles and tools to healthcare and medicine.

With a great shift of society towards high tech machinery and technology, the demand for Biomedical Engineers has been increased in Medicine Industry. Biomedical Engineering has a great contribution to the development of revolutionary and life-saving aspects, for instance-Artificial Organs, Surgical Robots, Advanced Prosthetics, Kidney Dialysis, etc.

Eligibility and Career

Students seeking Biomedical Engineering as a career option can opt for 4 Years B. Tech Programme or 5 Years Integrated B. Tech-M. Tech Programmes at the Undergraduate level. After Graduation students can also go for 2 Years M. Tech Programme in Biomedical Engineering. For an undergraduate program, students must have completed their 12th standard in science stream from the recognized board whereas, for the Master’s degree (M.Tech), students should be graduated in Biomedical Engineering or Biotechnology Branch from recognized University or Institute. Students with MBBS degree are also eligible to pursue their Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering.

Options after Graduating in Medical Engineering

Biomedical Graduates can also go for higher studies with in the country or abroad or either they can also look for a job in the private sector and the public sector as well. The salary packages offered to biomedical engineers are quite attractive. To enhance their academic qualifications they can choose to pursue short as well as long term courses as an added advantage.

For Higher studies, Biomedical graduates can go for Masters degree. Various specializations- Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Instrumentations, Biochemical Engineering, BioMechanics, Clinical Engineering, Biotechnology or any other relevant branches of the same field are available for Masters degree in India and abroad. Another option after graduation is pursuing a Masters in Business Administration in Healthcare Management or they can also go for Doctorate in Philosophy (Ph.D.) after completing B.E or B.Tech in Biomedical Engineering.

Scope and Job Opportunities

Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Tools and Equipment Manufacturing firms are the prime recruiters of Biomedical Engineers. For Graduates- Biomedical Engineer, Lab Technician/Administrator, Physician, Equipment Design Engineer, Software Engineer, and Research Engineer are the common job profiles available in Private as well as in Government Sector. Government agencies like Drug Departments and State Health Departments are also well known to recruit Biomedical Graduates.

On completion of Masters Degree in Biomedical Stream, students can also opt for Lecturership either in Private Institution or Government Colleges. Opting Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) course in Biomedical stream will open doors to the Research and Development Sector in the dedicated field.  

The Biomedical Engineers has various roles to play in the Medical Industry. They design the systems to monitor the patients and equipment for the surgery of the patients. Clinical Labs, Laboratories and Various Units are designed by them. Moreover, they provide medical treatment with new engineering technology to the hospitals and healthcare unit. Hence, Biomedical Engineers plays an important role with advance techniques in Medicine Industry.
