Stress is a part of everyone’s life. From kids to old people, every person comes across a change in his life and the effect of change of life is said to be called as Stress, it is not the change but our interpretation and reaction to the change. The events cause stress varies from person to person. It is also termed as pressure from external forces that make a person feel tense from inside. Abnormality in behavior, psychology, emotional outburst, physiological changes in a human being, all such changes named as Stress.
Since Stress is a very complex concept, different things cause different types of stress in different types of people. For an example, a student’s life is subjected to different kinds of stressors. From the very start till university life, different style of education and demands causes stress in their life. Stress has become very common among University’s students, it can be controlled by Stress Management strategies cause if not well managed, stress can have both positive and negative consequences on students. When students are stressed, their capacity for learning is much more likely to fail as all their brainpower is busy on dealing with the “fight or flight” response in the body. It sounds that student’s bodies are assured to either run away from the stressor or stick around and fight against it. In this complete cycle, learning takes a backseat in student’s career. In such situation, teachers can play a very important role to help them cope with the situation and reduces their anxiety and stress.
Stress Management tools used by Teachers on Students
Communication is the key point which a teacher can do for students. Keeping open channels for students for support, counseling, and advice will make the students feel that you are on their side. Keep the discussions where you share your own experience of dealing with stress in your life. This approach will build safety in the classroom and comfy students with a feeling that they have someone to talk in come what may.
Rather than assigning students with homework daily, assign them with a packet of homework and let them decide the deadline to complete it as with extracurricular activities like sports students do not able to complete their assigned homework on daily basis. This way they will be able to catch up with studies on the weekends.
Along with flexible assignments, it is very important to teach students about time management. Get rid of Distractions, Planning Schedule, Usage of calendar and checklists, Getting organized and very important, getting a Good Night’s Sleep are the topmost time management tips for students taught by teachers.
Appreciation of Efforts and Products
The effort is the first step towards Product. Some students do study hard for hours but not be able to score good grades, however, some of the students score A+ grade with less study. It can be stressful for the students who are putting forth so many efforts and not able to score a good score. Offering effort score as a reward for students who have worked hard will keep them motivated and goal oriented. Appreciation of Efforts as well as Products does not make students feel unequal and discriminated.
Keeps the all-around record in Account
If the student somehow gets flunked in an exam or forgets an assignment but is a reliable student, consider that into account. Keeping a point system for the students is a tricky way of fair execution. For an example, every time if a student comes up with good scores or he is able to submit the assignment on time, award them with a point. For students having more than 10 points, they are given a free pass if they miss an assignment or do poorly in an exam.
Five Minute Meditation
Keep five minutes for the students to meditate privately or imagery at the beginning and at the end of the day. For an example, you can ask students to do counting up to 100 on their own, teach them deep breathing exercises and give them time to relax their bodies and minds. Surprisingly, even five minutes of meditation carries stress reduction benefits.
Visual Imagery is a basic mind relaxation technique to calm students mind. For instance, ask students to close their eyes and visualize them to be on the beach and doing all the activities they feel like doing and by the end of the task, you can also ask students to keep a journal of post visualization feelings and thoughts. This activity can be performed even at home or any time to relieve stress.
Performing any physical activity leads students to the better frame of mind. The movement to music-freeze-dance, silent ball, laughing, listening to music, etc, any sort of physical activity helps students to make the connection between the activity and stress reduction. Thus, it has a positive impact on students.
Reward points for Eating Healthy
Keeping a healthy and nutritious diet keeps stress at bay. Teachers cannot control what their students eat in their routine but can again play a trick by offering reward points to students like a free homework pass for those who bring vegetables, fruits, eggs, etc for lunch.
Multiple Part Examination
Try to keep balanced exams as much as possible for students. Examinations with multiple parts like Verbal Examination, Open Book Tests, Creative and Innovative Application Exam, etc where students learn differently will keep the boredom of monotonous study away and also gives a chance to flourish different styles of learning in a different way.
Keep in Touch with Parents
Keeping communication channels open with the parents of stressed out kids will help teachers to explore other issues which affect student besides class work. Being a Student’s Advocate in any way possible will help the student cope with difficult life situations and circumstances.
Help to Cope up with Exam Pressure
Let students chew gum during exams or doodle on a notepad to handle pressure as it will relieve pent-up energy and will help students with concentration and this way nervous students will do better in an exam.
Learning of Journey
Students are always concerned about exams and grades without knowing the beautiful journey of learning they are going through. The attempt of Teachers to make students feel the Beauty of learning even in failures will always keep students ahead in their journey.
